Most people do not even know what bandwidth is? Or how it relates to
anything having to do with the internet and websites? To put this in
simple terms; the bandwidth of the internet connection and web hosting
service that you are working with, actually measures as to how much
traffic in terms of people come to your website from somewhere else on
the internet and leave your website to go elsewhere online, to either
look for other information or just because they found what they were
looking for.
What does all of that mean to you and your website?
The bandwidth is what determines how many people can get onto your
website from somewhere else online, as well as how quickly they can get
out of your site, once they have found whatever it was that they were
looking for, in the first place. If your web hosting provider or
internet connection only has a very narrow bandwidth, then you are
likely to have far less traffic than you would like and possibly much
less than you need to make sure that you can stay afloat in today’s very
tough business environment. Having the widest possible bandwidth will
significantly increase the amount of traffic that comes and goes from
your web site, each and every day.
The total bandwidth also controls, just how much information flows back
and forth between websites and between users on the internet in general.
If you have a narrow bandwidth then you are not going to be able to
process, upload or download information as fast as you would like or
need to; which will get really, really frustrating after a while. On the
other hand if you have a server and internet connection with the widest
possible bandwidth, then you and other people will not have that much
trouble uploading information to, downloading information from or
inputting information into forms on your website.
The importance of having the widest possible bandwidth all has to do
with, what you intend to do with your website? If you are not going to
be having that many visitors to your website and do not intend to have
that much information on your site; then a narrower bandwidth will suit
your needs pretty well. This will be fine, for a personal website that
is intended for a small group of people to have access to, for reasons
of updating them on your current situation in life and what is going on
around you.
If, however, you are going to be running a website that is for a
business or that is part of a network of linked or like-minded websites
(i.e. social networking sites), then you are definitely going to need
the widest possible bandwidth that the Internet Service Provider (ISP)
and your web hosting provider can give you, so that you can keep up with
the traffic demands and the informational exchange that are bound to be
needed.
The bottom line here is that the amount of bandwidth that you really
will need all depends upon what you are going to be doing with your web
site and whether you are going to have traffic equal to that of an
interstate or only a few people, as you would see on the side roads and
back- roads. You also need to know how much information that you are
going to be uploading, downloading and exchanging? In order to know how
much bandwidth will be enough for your needs. Too little is disastrous,
yet no such concept as too wide bandwidth exists, it all depends on you
and your needs.
